We have been working on a project to assist with the dimensional verification of Ball Mill Shell sections. Each half shell is approximately 8 M high and has 6 – 9 meter diameter.

For the quality control audit we confirm the shell is correctly shaped and that there is sufficient material for machining of the flanges.

Utilising a 3D model and Polyworks software we can establish the shell cylinder centre, flange orientations and half shell surface in relation to the design cylindrical shape required.

After we have verified the reference coordinate system we utilise the Laser tracker “goto” function to define a grid of 120 surface points on the shell face. Considerable savings in production time are realised by not having to pre-mark the shell surface using the more traditional approach of a combination of rating and vertical lasers.

Dimensional verification results are marked on the shell surface in real-time as we carry out the measurements. This allows the Quality control department to immediately  decide if shell requires heat treatment  or can be sent for stress relief prior to machining.
